The laser is the plastic surgeon's newest tool in skin resurfacing. The laser is a further refinement of the techniques of dermabrasion and chemical peels. The laser offers a higher degree of precision than the former skin resurfacing procedures.

2 lasers are currently in use for skin resurfacing:

. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser

. Erbium laser

Each laser has features which are desirable for skin resurfacing.

The CO2 laser is used for to treat deeper wrinkles and acne scars. The Erbium laser is used to treat fine wrinkles. The recuperation time from the Erbium laser is significantly less than that of the CO2 laser. Whereas the erythema (redness) may last 8 to 12 weeks for the CO2 laser, the typical erythema resolves in 10 to 15 days with the Erbium laser.
